Wasp Identification

Make sure to follow the description below to help make sure the insects going in and out are actually wasps:

Wasps have a black and bright yellow pattern on their abdomen. With a black head, thorax and six legs, an adult wasp is similar in size to a worker honey bee at roughly 12-15mm in length whereas queens are larger at around 20mm in length.

Wasp Life Cycle

In early spring the queen wasp emerges from winter hibernation. She starts by finding a new suitable nest site. Once she has built a small golf sized nest she then lays her eggs into individual brood cells within the nest, these eggs will then quickly turn into grubs. These grubs will be fed by the queen on mainly an insect diet until they pupate. Infertile female workers will emerge from pupation and soon start to carry out a variety of duties for the queen inside and outside the nest.

The queen wasp will now only carry on laying eggs into the new cells which the worker wasps are now building at a rapid rate. By the time mid to end of summer arrives the wasp nest will now be much larger with wasp numbers now reaching up to 7000. Towards the end of the year the queen produces eggs that hatch into male drones and fertile females (New queens).

These are raised in much larger cells. The drones and new queens will leave the nest and mate the new fertile queens will hibernate in sites protected from the harsh winter weather coming. As winter approaches the cold frosts will kill off the old nest including the workers, drones and the old queen leaving a redundant nest which will never be used again

Wasp Treatment

Norwich Pest Control can safely remove your wasps nest from your home or business premises. We operate in the Norwich area and our pest control operatives cover all of Norfolk.

The treatment of Wasps will be carried out using a residual powder based spray which is injected directly into the nest or to the entry point e.g. under tiles/fascia hole in wall/ground etc. This powder is picked up on the wasp's body as it returns, and is then carried back into the nest.

Wasps inside the nest come into contact with the returning insects and the dust is past to each other. A single Treatment will kill every adult within the nest including the queen. Treatment usually takes 1-2 days to be 100% effective. Removal of the nest is not required, as the wasps never use the same nest twice.

There are no benefits of removing old or treated nests.

The chemical, Ficam D (contains Bendiocarb), provides residual control that will last for approx 4 weeks depending on weather conditions outside. Wasps choose the site because it is a good location as the property remains a good location year in year out, future queens may also build there.

Unfortunately, not much can be done to prevent wasps choosing your property.
